The KNOWNREX Program started in January 2015 at the Rexdale Community Hub, in partnership with the Albion Boys and Girls Club. We started by pursuing outreach initiatives at various schools and community centres throughout the Rexdale neighbourhood. We engaged the youth around their passions and the arts and invited them out to the auditions we were hosting in the Rexdale Hub. In total, 30 Youth came out and 18 auditioned to enrol in our 20 week Performance Training Intensive.
It was an honour to work with such talented young people, supporting their development as artists and young leaders, as they expressed their stories and spoke on behalf of their community. Through the use of poetry, hip-hop and songwriting, they honed in on their stories and experiences, and created pieces that they developed and performed at the culminating showcase, entitled “Growing Pains”, at the Rexdale Community Hub.
Youth participants spent 15 weeks in the K.N.O.W.N workshop series, designed to assist them with getting clarity on who they are, building confidence and community and sharing their perspective. The following 4 weeks were spent developing the creative pieces that they would be performing at the final showcase. And the week prior to the event they were given the opportunity to test out their piece on a live audience by performing at the R.I.S.E. Edutainment Open Mic.
